Brianna Torres of Birthroot, smiling and clasping her hands together

Hi! I’m Brianna.

she/her

I am a Boricua yoga teacher, movement artist, experienced program manager, educator, herbalist, poet and birthworker currently rooted on native Lenapehoking lands, also known as NYC. I offer reproductive justice focused, holistic abortion, birth and postpartum support throughout the area.

As a Doula, I am blessed with the opportunity to combine my love and respect of the human body with my mission to provide support to all on a sliding scale basis. I came to this work after spending many hours sitting in meditation, ceremony and calling in clarity around my life’s purpose. I was traveling abroad, working three jobs, teaching Yoga and freelance contemporary dancing in San Francisco when I hit an emotional roadblock. Simply put, I was burnt out.

While working as a professional dancer, my appreciation of the human body and its innate power was deeply affirmed. During this same time, I was inspired by a friend’s process of becoming a Doula and realized how a birth companion witnesses a full spectrum of the human experience. I began to trust that I too could offer my knowledge of Reiki, Yoga, movement and Herbalism to all birthing people, as they journey into parenthood. This led to the creation of Birthroot. Birthroot is a Doula company that is honored to work with all birthing people but focuses on working with BIPOC, LGBTQ and folks that are disabled under a reproductive justice framework.

As a Latina, I have always worked on calling in wisdom from those that came before me. While sitting with grandmother medicine, I heard my ancestors' voices clearly communicating that I needed to pursue birthwork. I have never felt more at home within a career than as a Cornerstone Birth and certified Postpartum Doula. I offer holistic support that is grounding, affirming and nurturing. I believe that all birthing people are warriors and should be treated as such.

Whether I am working with you prior to, during, or after birth, my goal is to guide you through a transformational experience as a mirror of your own innate strength and grace. In honor of what is best for you and your family, I offer informational, emotional, physical and advocacy support. I am in awe of my journey and am humbled to work beside you as you bring life into this world!

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!

 WHY THE TERM BIRTH WORKER?

The word Doula comes from the ancient Greek word, meaning “a woman who serves” and was often associated with handmaidens or servants. Today, the word Doula refers to professional birth and postpartum support companions.

In an effort to participate in language justice and decolonize language, I refer to myself as a Birth worker. You may notice that Birthroot uses the term Birth worker and Doula interchangeably, this is due to the fact that in mainstream culture “Doula” is more of a familiar term. I would like to do my part in shifting that by honoring the efforts of the wise womxn, granny midwives, abuelitas, stewards and true Birth workers that came before me, by incorporating the term Birth worker.
